Architecture Case History
The Military Sealift Command's Command, Control, Communications, and Computers (N6) Directorate had a need to develop a Technical Architecture to satisfy the federal and DoD mandates and to address N6's need to standardize its information technology components. Binary's team developed and published the MSC Technical Architecture Baseline, which provides a snapshot of the technology components that are used to support MSC's IT infrastructure. In addition, Binary led a team effort to develop and publish the Technical Architecture Concept of Operations (CONOPS) that was published throughout the MSC.The Technical Architecture and CONOPS provides MSC with the architecture framework that will be used to affect planning, budgeting, integration capability decisions, acquisitions, organizational design, and operations. The benefits of the Technical Architecture and CONOPS to MSC are fivefold and include: (1) providing a clear picture of the technology that supports MSC; (2) helping MSC determine if existing architectures can support the introduction of new systems; (3) facilitating refreshing the technology base and maintaining a state-of-the-art environment; (4) contributing to IT-related purchase savings; and (5) reducing the cost of managing the IT infrastructure.
